About Dr. Cláudia Cooke

A lover of nature and music, Dr. Cooke believes in aligning people with their natural rhythms. Some of the most accessible resources we have for such connection are animals, trees, and flowering plants. The beautiful garden view from her office, its quietness, and the frequent presence of her dog Louie, therapy dog extraordinaire, create an environment conducive to such alignment.

Claudia M. Cooke, M.D. is a Board-certified physician, and has Physician Certification in Acupuncture. As a member of ACAM (American College for the Advancement of Medicine) and The Institute for Functional Medicine, Dr. Cooke continues to champion medicine from a holistic paradigm, delivering the best of integrative approaches to her patients and their families. A long-time preceptor to Columbia University medical students at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, she is helping to shape the minds of tomorrow’s physicians.

Dr. Cooke's lineage extends back through five generations of physicians in her family. Her personal addition to the family's medical pedigree is that of the combined approach, one that draws upon traditional medical theory and training, and which draws upon Chinese medicine, acupuncture, nutrition and other individualized techniques and modalities. With her extensive medical education in the United States, France, and Brazil, Dr. Cooke brings a broad frame of reference to clinical practice.

A graduate of Tulane University Medical School, Dr. Claudia Cooke is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and also has Physician Certification in Acupuncture in New York State. Dr. Cooke was recently honored with election to Fellowship in the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine and is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture.

Dr. Cooke honed her clinical skills for over twelve years in emergency medicine and is deeply versed in emergency care and its varying perspectives. Five years were spent in one of New York City's busiest ERs where she cared for over 20,000 patients in the acute care setting.

She currently holds an appointment as Assistant in Medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital's Columbia division. She has served as Clinical Preceptor both in Physical Diagnosis at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and in Acupuncture to the UCLA School of Medicine's Medical Acupuncture for Physicians course.

Dr. Claudia Cooke holds a Master’s in Public Health from Tulane University with seven years of occupational health experience.

Dr. Cooke maintains close contacts with many practitioners, both conventional and alternative, and will make appropriate referral for a range of treatments including orthopedics, gynecology, psychotherapy, massage, Feldenkrais, or Alexander technique.
